Osprey Return

The osprey have returned from their wintering over in warm climates and continents to the south of us. The males and females winter over in separate places from one another, but when it is time to return to the nesting grounds, they find their life time mate and nest together again.

The female will spend most of her time on the nest, however, the male osprey is a sentinel guard. The male will perch on a nearby stump, tree, branch, or post to stand in protection and service of the female osprey. As the days get longer, the male will relieve the female osprey of her nesting ritual for a short period of time while she stretches her wings, glides on an air current and returns to the nest within ten minutes.

The male osprey will hunt and deliver the food and help feed the young fledglings once they have hatched. Osprey generally have 2-3 young each spring. It takes both parents to raise them. Righ now, the females are preparing the nest for the eggs. Once she starts to sit on the eggs it will be about 40 days.

Come out and watch the osprey as they begin the timeless ritual of nesting.

Father and Son

Steve and Matt ran a Full Day Whitewater Rafting Trip on the Rogue River today. Matt spent the majority of his time in the inflatable kayak and he sure handled the rapids like he had been doing it for years. He is a strong young man and a confident paddler.

Tim and Steve enjoyed good conversation, watching Matt, taking photos, and viewing the wildlife on the Blue Rocket Boat. The ride through Argo was a wild one, and even rapids like to think they are bigger than they are at times! Argo used to be a waterfall about 70 years ago until river pioneer Glenn Wooldridge used a little dynamite to make it passable. Argo still remembers the younger days and today she was kicking up her heals.

Here's to great memories! Thanks Steve and Matt!

Paddling Rotation

Our guests today came from Oregon and Michigan. Everybody got a turn in the inflatable kayaks and took turns running the whitewater in the self propelled dynamic duckies! As Stephanie put it, there is no better way to get down the river than a raft or kayak...Its all good~

The osprey put on a show today, as everyone got to see it dive for a catch just inside Woolridge Canyon. A bald eagle looked on, but the left the osprey to enjoy his prey back at the nest with mate and fledglings...this time!

The water guns were relentless within family groups and there are promises of a return trip. We are sure it is for the whitewater, not for the retaliation of water fights, but you never know! Thank you all for such an enjoyable and happy day on the Rogue.

Oregon Family Camp

The Prices joined us for a two day Family Camp in the early days of September. Cousins gathered together for a peaceful journey and a wild ride! How is that possible? That's Life on the Rogue!!

Dena, Aaron, Roy and June all paddled in the inflatable kayaks. There was one tandem kayak and two singles. They all tried their hand at duo digging in the double kayak. The mix and match teams were very impressive as both individual paddlers and team paddlers.

After twelve miles of river time, everyone was ready to enjoy the easy time in camp. Dinner was cooked over the campfire and included fresh salmon, garlic bread, fresh from the garden vegetables, and a Dutch Oven Dessert of peach cobbler. After the stars were out, we stoked up the fire and Dena had her first taste of S'mores.

The second day of paddling started after a hearty breakfast of Rocky Riffle scramble eggs, bacon, sausage and Dutch Oven biscuits served with homemade blackberry jam and raspberry jam. The paddling crew was ready to hit the waves and enjoy the gorgeous Southern Oregon weather.

Our pro paddlers tested the whitewater floating position in Galice Rapid and Argo and came out victorious! They even managed to save their hats! Traveling the Rogue River with the Price Family enriched our summer. Thanks for a memorable trip!
